Love Is Truly a Gift
Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night. To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving.
âKAHLIL GIBRAN
Recently I had lunch with a wonderful woman. She's sensitive, attractive, smart, and funny. The word I think most often of in her presence is lovely. She's also alone and has been for many years now. Her lack of an intimate relationship saddens her deeply. At lunch she spoke of her longing for love, and my heart just broke for her. Of anyone I have ever known, she certainly âdeservesâ to be loved. And yet, she is alone.
Sometimes when I am really stuck in the pit of negativity about my relationship, what helps most is to remember what a privilege it is to be loved at all. What a miracle to be blessed by the grace of another person's presence, attention, care. So many wonderful people I know are alone, longing for just this very experience that I am now mentally relegating to the garbage heap. How many women friends have cried on my shoulder over their lack of a special someone to share their lives with? How dare I take it for granted or, worse, denigrate it!
Being loved is a privilege not to be scoffed at. It is a great and powerful mystery that one person loves another. In some way, it has nothing to do with us personally, for thousands, if not millions, of equally worthy people stand outside the experience wistfully looking in. It is a gift of the universe not to be taken lightly.
The same is true for the opportunity to love another human being. What a chance to practice patience, flexibility, constancy, commitment. What an occasion for soulmakingâto learn to see someone for who they really are rather than a reflection of who you would wish them to be, and to want the highest good for that being, regardless of your own self-interest.
When we remember what a tremendous gift we have been given in the opportunity to love and be loved, we can't help but feel a swell of appreciation for the possibility itself.
